Morgan

Many congratulations on getting to 1.0. When will V2.0pre be available? :-) :-) :-)

One problem here - the changelog says "Added a 'Snipe Amount + Shipping' column at the request (and donated code) of a user.", but I don't seem to have this column. Do I need to do something to enable it?

regards,
Philip

Greetings,
The column is named 'Snipe Max', which is supposed to indicate the actual amount you'll have to pay, with shipping. It's a terrible name, in retrospect. :)

Also, unfortunately, the contributed code has a bug whose patch wasn't accepted in time for the release. It'll throw a lot of exceptions, filling up a huge log file in the JBidwatcher directory. *sigh*

It does work, but it logs hundreds of K, and maybe even megs of errors into the log file over time.

There's just not enough time to do all the testing I needed to do, unfortunately. I've hotfixed the version on the site, but there's probably a good 1250 users who have downloaded the version that throws the exception. Thankfully very few users configure their columns, and only some of those will pick the poorly named 'Snipe Max' column.

I'll field the user complaints as time goes on, I'm sure.

Re-download it (from the web site), and choose the 'Snipe Max' column from the 'Custom Columns' sub-menu off the context menu on the tabs. (Right-click or control-click on a tab.)

Latest program (update) Didn't work!

Hi, I downloaded new program and it didn't work. I have been using the old program and it has been sniping fine. That program told me there was an update so I downloaded it. All my settings and auctions automatically showed up in the new program. When it came time for a snipe, it didn't work. There was a message at the bottom that popped up and said" it was unsuccessful". I can't remember the exact quote as it was gone to quick. I have gone back to using the old program and successfully sniped 2 auctions today. You have a fine program. I love it even if the postage doesn't work. I needed a program that worked when I wasn't there. Your previous version works wonderful for what I need it to do. I don't mean for my post to be complaining about your great program. I just wanted to update you on how the latest program was working. You are quite talented! Kim

Greetings,
If you email me the information about the bid, including the auction number, I can take a look and see what happened. It's unlikely the new version would fail a bid where the old one would have worked.

Unfortunately, none of the messages say 'unsuccessful'. Some say your bid was too low, the bid was successful but the reserve wasn't met...

I'd love to help, and try to figure out what went wrong for you; drop me an email if you read this.

quick question
(Anonymous)
2006-09-11 12:45 am UTC (link)
Hi Morgan,

Firstly congrats on a fantastic (and free) product! I use jbidwatcher at home and it works a treat.

However, now I'm trying to use it on a different machine (at work!) and I'm having a few problems. I'm logged in ok (through a proxy server) and can add auctions etc. However, when I try to "Get my ebay items" it synchronises with the server ("Done synchronising with My eBay") but nothing shows up... it's still empty.

It works fine at home so I'm not sure what could be different here. Any ideas?

Thanks, Steve

ps. I don't know whether this is significant (I think not) but it shows my login details in the footer as steve@ebay rather than steve@ebay.com.au (I'm using the australian site)

Just letting you know I've fixed my problem by deleting my .jbidwatcher directory and starting afresh. Thanks again for a cool program.

Greetings,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you regarding this. If you saved the old directory, you probably could have gotten it back up by just killing off the 'display.cfg' file, which was the source of many issues in 1.0pre6, and sometimes carried some of those issues over to 1.0.

Hi Morgan,

Same problem has come up again next time I've tried to use jbidwatcher. I keep getting the "Not logged in..." message in the panel, but when I hover the mouse over it I don't get any tooltip telling me the error message.

Does jbidwatcher keep an error log of some sort, or is the way of switching one on?

This time deleting the .jbidwatcher directory doesn't seem to work either. It's definitely not the password (though that would seem the obvious explanation)... I've retyped about 5 times, and I can log into ebay.com.au directly without a problem.

BTW, I'm using the new 1.0 release now... any ideas?

Thanks! -- Steve

BTW someone should post a review on CNET download.com for Jbidwatcher, it has no reviews but it deserves several

Greetings,
Probably not... Take a look at:

and follow db1ras (Andreas)'s suggestion, and let me know if it helps.

Terrific.
Searches are added easily.
Updates searches well and fast.
Very smooth front end.
Manually placed bid easily.
Have not sniped yet and that will be the most important of course.
Looks like a job well done. Hope you can stay on top of eBay breakage.
I want to keep this secret :)
Thanks a heap!

Hi, Morgan.

I just started using JBidWatcher today and it's fantastic!! I'm duly impressed and humbled.

In case you're wondering, I learned about JBidWatcher on Lifehacker. There was a thread started yesterday about eBay sniping and several people recommended your software.

One question - will JBidWatcher work (e.g. snipe away) even if my computer is turned off? I tried finding an answer to this question on the site and couldn't locate it...so I apologize for asking it here.

Silly, unrelated question - you don't happen to be related to anyone named Greg Schweers, do you?

Thanks again for the wonderful software!!

Greetings,
Lifehacker, hmm? I'll have to check it out... IIRC (vaguely) Lifehacker was one of the places highly promoting Moleskine notebooks, and I certainly love mine... :)

JBidwatcher is a local sniping program. It doesn't talk to a 3rd party server, or anything, it does all its operations off your computer. (Well, it talks to eBay, but that's obvious...) This means you don't have to trust anyone else with your login info, but it also means that your computer has to be on and awake when the snipe goes off. 'Sleep mode' is the most common reason for failed snipes that I get emailed about. When you close JBidwatcher, it will warn you if there are outstanding snipes.

As for the Greg Schweers question, I'm not exactly sure. There are a lot of Schweers out there, but the main groups of my family are in Florida, and Seattle. I'm a bit out of touch with most of the rest of my family, for various reasons.

You're very welcome, and I hope it continues to work wonderfully for you!

internal web server not showing snipe (myMax/snip)
(Anonymous)
2006-12-03 07:28 pm UTC (link)
Hi,

i love it, but internal webserver does not show myMax/Snipping bid anymore, just for aucions which has ended it is shown, but for running auctions just a "--", like when snipe was not set. no problem in snipping, just a displayprob in the internal webserver.

Can this be fixed ?

no problem seeing my set snipe in the javagui!

Greetings,
Hmm! I'll check it out. I'm sure it can be resolved... There's a reasonable chance I could even tell you how to do it on your end, because the actual display is done via a transformation file which it'll look for in its save directory before using its internal one.

You could extract the internal one out, and edit it, but it's a bit complex...

Morgan - I know I speak for the vast majority of very happy, very satisfied and very appreciative end-users whose eBaying experience is enhanced significantly by the deployment of JBidWatcher. I purchase specialty medical equipment for a charity clinic, and many of the items I've been able to acquire through eBay auctions could only be won by sniping. As our budget is thinner than a well-worn dime, I've got to make every dollar count, and JBidWatcher is not only the best "free" individual auction-monitoring and bidding software out there, repeated evaluation reveals it would be among the best commercial offerings, as well.

As a result, and to help retard the theft of future development, please inform those of us using the product legitimately if/when you will be releasing a fee-for-product version - it's unfortunate that some individuals' morals only extend as far as their wallet; that's always the risk with open-source. I've also taken the liberty of donating to your Paypal account - I sincerely wish you all the best as JBidWatcher moves forward.

I look forward to "The Next Generation", and wish you and your family a happy holiday season.

Regards,

Jeff
