It's 'official', 1.0pre6.
Greetings,
1.0pre6 has been released, with the few minor issues that were reported mostly fixed.

Not everything is perfect, there's still some cosmetic issues, but we've been without an official release for TOO long.

All the download information is on the homepage at:
http://www.jbidwatcher.com

Enjoy!

Hi,

thanks for the new release. But closed tabs still show up after a restart of JBidwatcher ;-)

Formatting bugs fixed OK (removed columns that reappeared on restart, some auction items displayed "Info" unformatted). Multiple sort looks like it works and the Total field was a good idea.

But now I cannot create a new tab. No complaint in the gui, just doesn't create a tab. Let me know if you want the stdout listing.

It will place a "Bid", but haven't tried a "Snipe" yet.

Thanks for your efforts. After some thought I decided I _would_ let others know about your app - even though they might be bidding on the same stuff.

If it's easy, it'd be nice to be able to enable/disable the thumbnails from the GUI. They're useful, but they also get in the way a lot. Howabout making the hover time (b4 display) settable?

Cheers. Rufus

Multi-snipe is now working. No other problems so far (other than a double-take when I saw that kitten picture!)

Nice work. Thanks for a great program.

Greetings,
I am presuming this is only happening with one particular item.

If you hover your cursor over the item, does it have a really large thumbnail/graphic associated with it?

Hello,

yes you are right, it's only for one item, but unfortunately I don't have it anymore so I cannot check if it really had or not a big thumbnail.
I'll keep my eyes open and if it happens again I'll confirm it to you.

Thank you for the prompt answer.

a couple of problems
(Anonymous)
2006-04-03 09:19 pm UTC (link)
Happy Monday (assuming you survived the weekend :-)
1. snipe is not showing up on the web page.
2. A really bad case of thrashing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrashing) on my server box yesterday. Top showed java using just about all 256M of memory. Might the problem be launching with "java -Xmx512m" when I don't have 512m of anything? Should I set the max heap size to less than max memory? Right now I running it without the -X values and it's only using about 17% of memory.
Thanks

Greetings,
Heh... I did, in fact, survive the weekend. It was pretty relaxing, since I'd done the release in advance, so that I didn't have to spend much of it focusing on the release side of things, I could spend it answering questions, and watching movies.

As for the issues, for 1., unfortunately I discovered that after the fact, myself. :( I have a 'cute' solution, if you're willing to try it. The web page is now generated via an XSL transformation of the 'auctions.xml' file. It looks for the stylesheet in the .jbidwatcher directory first, and in its own .jar file if it's not there. With that in mind, it MIGHT (I haven't tested it) be possible to give you an altered .xsl file which does the right thing, and displays the snipe / max bid amount in the correct column, and it would 'magically' fix the issue by being put in the right directory.

As for 2., errrf... Yeah, -Xmx512m will end up allocating virtual memory if it gets over the actual amount of memory in your system. If you operate without any '-X' amount, though, it'll limit JBidwatcher to 64M, which ends up being a bit tight.

If you aggressively prune your 'completed' auctions, and aren't watching too many items, this won't be an issue. I, however, tend to do stupid things like (checking my current numbers) watch 64 active items, and 1170 completed items, which sucks down a whole 207M, second only to Firefox in its memory usage.

One of my long-term goals is to somehow disk-base JBidwatcher. It's a dream, and I'm not sure how I'd go about it offhand, but it's a future goal, to prevent memory from growing to infinity as the item count does.

Anyhow, your solution should be fine. You can also set it to around 128M, and it should be able to breathe pretty well, in case you get 'Out of Memory' exceptions now and then.

2. I set -Xmx to 128m and java is only using 25% of memory at the moment. It appears to be playing nice but I'll listen for disk drives going berserk.
1. I'm brave or foolish (usually the latter), I'll try out the .xls file. Do you send it to me or do I pick it up somewhere?
Thanks

I dunno if this is URL load, but I use ebay.de and when I click on Get MyEbay Items it says "No items on page!" which is not true. This happened first with 0.9.9 when Ebay changed their site. The current version for some reason does not fix it for me.

Thank you for your work. When Jbidwatcher was working it was a wonderful program and it made Ebay so much easier.

Same issue here.

I'm using URL load for all searches. That still seems to work for ebay.com, but it doesn't work for ebay.de anymore. I've posted the exact error message in sourceforge bugtracking a week ago:
The log file says:
"Unable to find item count on page!"
This looks as if ebay had changed the page, and it's probably a fairly simple fix.

Keep up the good work with bidwatcher!

Hi CyberFox,

when using "get myEbay items" all auctions are read correctly. Just the "max" column contains '--' only. After the first update, the content of 'max' is displayed correctly.

Bug or feature?

Best Regards - and many thanks for this fine working release - ;-)

Watching the memory usage for the java instance that is running jbidwatcher it seems to increase by 10 to 20% each day that it runs. Since I set -Xmx to half available memory it dies an out of memory death after about three days. Any thoughts.

Hi Morgan, nice work!

I've been running JBidWatcher (1.0pre6) for about a week or so. Am experiencing some erratic behavior. This A.M. when placing a snipe, the bid was immediately placed on Ebay even though the snipe preferences are set to 10. Running on a Mac, Os 10.39.

Snipes Failing :-(
(Anonymous)
2006-05-01 11:47 am UTC (link)
Hello Morgan, & people!

I first encountered jbidwatcher at the beginning of the year, release 0.9.9 and didn't have any sniping problems, but since upgrading (necessarily so) to 1.0.6pre, I have had a very noticeable number of sniping failures; I would say, between 15 and 20%. Literally, a failure will occur with a successful snipe either side of it. I am running OS X 10.3.9 and, looking at my console logs, the 'doomed-to-failure' snipe is apparent from the time that the snipe is prepared and the forms are requested, resulting specifically in the message:

Failure to get the bid key! BID FAILURE!

Frustratingly though, this console-reported error situation isn't reflected in the UI which, if you happen to be around when the snipe is being processed, might allow you to notice, and then 'assume manual mode'!

Here's a more complete example:

I have more of this kind of report if it would be helpful, but they all seem to say very much the same. Additionally, I'm unable to select 'Show Last Error' from the contextual menu, which is greyed out.

Notwithstanding the fact that jbidwatcher is a great bit of software and, along with many people out there, I'm hugely grateful for the work that is put into it, I have to say that I've consequently lost out on a few really important (ie: rare) items recently and, as a result, I've now resorted to entering my maximum bid 'normally' which, sadly, kind of defeats the object of the program.

I would happily sacrifice search, sort, display functionality/reliability, for a rock solid snipe!!

I hope you can identify the problem and if I can be of any further help, providing logs etc., please don't hesitate to ask!

Many thanks,
John

Sorry, I accidentally posted this message under the 1.0pre5 release earlier. Great piece of software. 1.0pre6 on Windows 98se.It still has issues with posting bids/snipes again for already closed auctions after a restart of the program. Feature request: Can it synchronize the system clock to the ebay server also about 3 minutes or so before the auction ends? That would be a great feature. As it stands now, it logs events using system time which is often off by a few minutes and makes discerning the exact timing of the events from the log difficult. May be it could be made as an option.

Also I don't know if the multi feature is not working or whether I don't know how to use it. I did not find any information on how to use this feature. Is it set by matching color? How do you/Can you set it to get more than one item in a group?

First I would like to thank you very much for this very neat app. It served me well up until recently.
Since I upgraded from Panther to Tiger I have not been able to use JBid. It crashes as soon as I open it. It bounces in the dock once and closes. I downloaded a fresh one and same thing. I love this little app so much...I miss it!!!

Any ideas what is hanging it up?

Suggestion
(Anonymous)
2006-06-14 05:21 pm UTC (link)
Regarding companies selling your product.

How's about you put in a disclaimer roughly saying `If you resale this product code you will be billed X and X for every sale you make`. If you could get it tight enough you could compare the code enough to stand up in a court case, I think this has been successful before. You might not even have to risk the court case filing with an out of court settlement.

Now, I'm not saying that this would definately work or even maybe. But it's quite easy to put that disclaimer agreement saying `if you click X then you agree to be billed` so why not.

And while this may not actually work at least this way you might feel a little less cheesed off to see your code ripped off.

The way I see it this program has helped me so I hope I have been able to help you

Greetings,
JBidwatcher is currently having issues with some bad HTML on eBay's part. (At least I'm pretty sure it's bad HTML. They have an attribute without a value, which is supposed to be illegal.) Anyhow, I'm working on a fix.

However, with testing & such (and my day job taking up most of tomorrow), it'll probably be this weekend before I get it out.
